This was taken near dawn, before the thin morning fog had lifted from the pond. I tried to use the tallest trees on the outside edges of the frame to balance the photo a bit when I was framing the shot but it never felt quite right to me, until I cropped a little off the top to put the trees all the way up into the top corners. The darkness in the foreground is due to the wide-ish angle lens of the camera being only about 6 inches above the surface of the water, resting on a pier. I like that aspect of the photograph but some people find the darkness in the foreground to be distracting.
