Old box of mysteries

Old box of mysteries

This shot was the result of my experimenting with the concept of using light to extract the texture of a subject and a cool, very old box I was given as a gift (What's inside? You'll have to wait until we shoot that to find out). The concept is fairly simple: just aim the light across the surface of a subject so that it rakes across it, bringing out all the shadows from the texture of it. The toughest part was getting the light to hit only where I wanted it to and not spill all over the place - something that a little homemade cardboard tube (called a snoot) over the flash helped accomplish. I also tried out using a colored film or gel over the end of the flash to make the color of it's light a warmer amber color instead of bright white. Strobist info: snooted SB-600 with a 1/2 CTO gel zoomed to 85mm at 1/8 (I think) power fired from high camera left across the face of the label with a folded piece of white paper as a fill card on camera right to bounce the light around the right side of the box
